The Chinese Mainland is urging the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of the Taiwan region to stop political manipulation on the pretext of the coronavirus, said a Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson on Monday.
Spokesperson Zhao Lijian was responding to a query on the island's senior officials protesting its exclusion from the 74th annual World Health Assembly's (WHA) virtual meeting, which begins on Monday in Geneva.
Zhao also explained why China disagrees with the Taiwan region's participation in the WHA.
The DPP has obstinately adhered to the separatist position of "Taiwan independence" and refused to recognize the 1992 Consensus, thereby unilaterally undermining the political foundation for Taiwan's participation in the WHA, Zhao said.
"Taiwan's participation in the activities of international organizations, including the WHO must be dealt with in accordance with the one-China principle," he said, adding that the one-China principle is an international norm and the common consensus of the global community.
